On Tuesday, Apple announced the addition of four new iPhones into its family. These were iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Launched in a virtual presentation, all the iPhone 12 models are powered by Apple’s A14 Bionic chip.
They also come with Apple’s Super Retina XDR Display. In addition to that, the latest iPhones come equipped with the MagSafe option which attaches to the back of the phone magnetically to charge the phone wirelessly.
However, neither the power adapter nor EarPods are included in the boxes of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini. They only come with the iPhone and a USB-C to Lightning Cable.
The news understandably annoyed many of the Apple fans as the phones now do not come with an accessory that is crucial for running the phone. It means that customers now will have to pay extra out of their pockets.
Despite the inflow of overwhelming criticism, Apple has continued to defend its stance. Apple, in its defence, has said that the decision was taken to reduce waste.
According to Apple, this change allows the iPhone 12 series boxes to be much more compact. It means 70% more boxes can be shipped in the same space.
According to Apple’s statement, the latest change will proactively work towards cutting over 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually. It is reportedly equivalent to removing nearly 450,000 cars from the road every single year. Because of this, Apple decided to remove chargers from their boxes.
According to reports, this will also help Apple cut the costs significantly. Because of this, Apple will be able to save a considerable amount of resources. This decision will also help in making the phone packaging smaller and more compact. It will allow the company to ship more phones at the same time. It technically saves the company more on shipping costs.
Apple fans are annoyed with this decision. However, other companies have also seized the opportunity to advertise their products. Samsung recently took a dig at Apple by post a picture of a Galaxy travel adapter on Facebook with the caption “Included with your Galaxy.”
This latest decision might have been taken with environmental problems in mind. However, it does indicate that we are edging towards a dangerous trend.
Phone packages without any chargers might slowly become the norm. Back when Apple removed the headphone jack from their phones, many companies took a dig at Apple. Even Samsung released an ad where it showed that its line up of phones contained a headphone jack.
However, phone companies soon adopted Apple’s strategy. Even Samsung removed their initial ad and began to stop including a headphone jack. Nowadays most flagship phones ship without a headphone jack.
Only low budget and mid-range phones have headphone jacks these days. Some phones which are dubbed as “flagship killers” also come equipped with headphone jacks.
